SYNESTHESIA
ABOUT
This page is constantly updated! Come back to see the development of the project!
BACKGROUND
This is a new project to help make Larkin Street one of the most inviting corridors in the heart of the city. The project aims to create a stronger connection between Civic Center Plaza and Little Saigon using new light-based art that builds on Larkin Street’s rich cultural history.
THE PROJECT
This project is about making visible the sounds of the streets. People on the street have no choice but to be immersed and exposed to sound, but people passing through on car or on foot often separate themselves with headphones or the radio. Synesthesia is about making sounds seen, and voices heard.
WHAT'S NEXT
There will be two community engagement days on June 24 and 25 to come talk to us about how we can create a lighting project that YOU want. We're looking for input from anyone living on, working on, or otherwise invested in Larkin Street. You can also email us at:
LarkinLightingProject@ googlegroups.com.
Our first prototypes are spherical with wooden tops. We set a few up to see how they looked.
On June 24th we spent the day talking to the community, getting feedback.
People are excited about the interest in the area.

SYNESTHESIA
Our initial concept is an array of lights that changes colors based on the types of sounds in the area.
